UBmail Powered by Google: FAQ May 2014-after

Q1. ELIGIBILITY:  Who is eligible for UBmail powered by Google?
ANSWER. Right now, UBmail powered by Google is available for UB alumni who graduated between 1998-present. This FAQ pertains to alumni who graduated in May 2014 or after, including medical residents. If you graduated between January 1998 and April 2014, click here.

NOTE: UB employees -- even if they are UB alumni -- will continue to use their usual UBmail.

Q2. What will my UBmail powered by Google include?
ANSWER. All the same features offered through Google when you were a student: Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar and Google Docs. Chat is available only from within the Gmail web interface. Chat services are not available through the Google Talk client.

Q3. Where do I opt-in to get my UBmail powered by Google?
ANSWER. As of May 2014, you NO LONGER have to opt-in to keep your UBmail. All alumni are automatically opted in upon conferral. 

Q4. Where do I go to log in to my UBmail powered by Google?
ANSWER. Log in on the UBmail page.

Q5: How long will I have access to my UBmail powered by Google?
ANSWER: As long as you log in at least once every 90 days, your UBmail will remain active. If you no longer want your UBmail, simply select the "opt-out" choice on the webform to deactivate it.

Q6. Can I access my UBmail powered by Google from my mobile phone?
ANSWER: Check the information here for all the ways you can connect.

Q7. Can I access my UBmail powered by Google with Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.?
ANSWER: Yes. Get all the details here.

Q8. I already have a personal Gmail account. Can it be used for my UBmail?
ANSWER: No, UBmail powered by Google is separate.

Q9. Can I combine my Gmail and UBmail?
ANSWER: No, your UBmail powered by Google is separate.

Q10. I know people who graduated from UB before May 2014. Can they have UBmail powered by Google?
ANSWER: Alumni who graduated between January 1998 and April 2014 are eligible for UBmail powered by Google. They have a separate opt-in form. Alumni who graduated prior to 1998 are not yet eligible for a UBmail powered by Google, but they have other options.

Q11. I am an alumnus of UB and I also work for the university. Can I have UBmail powered by Google?
ANSWER: No, our agreement with Google does not allow UB employees to have UBmail powered by Google. Faculty and staff will continue using their UBmail as usual.

Q12. What happens when Google adds or changes features?
ANSWER: New features (versus Apps) that Google adds (such as Tasks under Calendar) will automatically become available to UBmail powered by Google users. If a new feature is in beta test period, it may appear in personal Google accounts before UBmail powered by Google accounts.

  • UBmail powered by Google is hosted and supported by Google. Limited support is available through UB's CIT Help Desk.
  • All data will be stored by Google; therefore, CIT will not be able to access and/or restore deleted data.
  • All UBmail powered by Google will be subject to Google’s policies and procedures.
  • UBmail powered by Google are subject to 2,000 sent message per day limit.  If you reach this limit, access to your UBmail powered by Google will be automatically disabled by Google for a period up until the 24th hour is reached.
  • Deleted messages sent to your Trash in UBmail powered by Google will automatically be deleted after 30 days by Google.
