Q1. ELIGIBILITY: Who is eligible for a UBMail Powered by Google account?
ANSWER. UBMail Powered by Google is available for specific UB alumni only. This FAQ is for alumni who graduated in May 2009 or after, including medical residents. If you graduated between January 1998 and April 2009, click here. NOTE: UB employees are not eligible for a Google account, even if they are UB alumni.
Q2. My UBMail Powered by Google account stopped working. What should I do?
ANSWER. There are several reasons your account may have deactivated. UB must have a postal (mailing) address for you in our database to maintin your account. Contact us to be sure we have yours. Have you registered for classes? If so, your account will be moved to another server. Are you working for the university? If so, your account will be moved to another server.
Q3. What will my UBMail Powered by Google include?
ANSWER. All the same features offered through Google when you were a student: Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar and Google Docs. Chat is available only from within the Gmail web interface. Chat services are not available through the Google Talk client.
Q4. Where do I go to opt-in to get my new UBMail Powered by Google account?
ANSWER. Opt-in from the UB alumni web site.
Q5. Where do I go to login to my UBMail Powered by Google account once it has been activated?
ANSWER. UBMail page
Q6: How long will my UBMail account remain active?
ANSWER: Until you opt-out. Simply select the "opt-out" choice on the online webform to deactivate your account.
Q7. Can I access my UBMail Powered by Google account from my mobile phone?
ANSWER: Check the information here for all the ways you can connect.
Q8. Can I access my UBMail Powered by Google with Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.?
ANSWER: Yes. Get all the details here.
Q9. Is there a deadline to set up my UBMail Powered by Google account?
ANSWER: You have approximately six months from graduating to opt-in before your UBMail is deactivated. If you don't opt-in within six months after you graduate, you are still eligilbe for a UBMail Powered by Google account; however, you will lose any UB mail that was in your account.
Q10. I already have a Gmail account. Can it be used for my UB e-mail?
ANSWER: No, you need a separate UBMail Powered by Google account.
Q11. Can I combine my Gmail and my UBMail account powered by Google?
ANSWER: No, you need a separate UBMail Powered by Google account.
Q12. I know people who graduated from UB before May 2009. Can they have a UBMail account powered by Google?
ANSWER: Alumni who graduated between January 1998 and April 2009 are eligible for a UB Mail account powered by Google. They have a separate opt-in form. Alumni who graduated prior to 1998 are not yet eligible for a UB Mail account powered by Google, but they have another option.
Q13. I am an alumnus of UB and I also work for the university. Can I have a UBMail Powered by Google account?
ANSWER: No, our agreement with Google does not allow UB employees to have a UBMail Powered by Google account. Therefore, faculty and staff are ineligible, even if they are alumni.
Q14. What happens when Google adds or changes features?
ANSWER: New features (versus Apps) that Google adds (such as Tasks under Calendar) will automatically become available to UBMail Powered by Google users. If a new feature is in beta test period, it may appear in personal Google accounts before UBMail Powered by Google accounts.
