Athletic Hall of Fame Awards

The 2008 Hall of Fame ceremony is Thursday, October 2, 2008 during Homecoming weekend. Check back for more details!

Athletic Hall of Fame seeking nominations

Since 1965 the UB Alumni Association has inducted hundreds of qualified individuals into its Athletic Hall of Fame. Honorees are permanently recognized on the Hall of Fame wall in Alumni Arena and form a continuing reminder of the importance of athletes and athletics to the university and its students, faculty and alumni.

Forms for all awards may be found below. Nominations for 2008 Hall of Fame consideration are due June 6, 2008.

Russell J. Gugino Award

Named in honor of past Alumni Association president and steadfast UB athletics supporter Russell J. Gugino, this award recognizes UB alumni (an individual, couple, or group) who have made significant contributions of time and resources to the university's athletic programs.

Philip B. Wels Award

The Dr. Philip B. Wels Award is given to individuals and groups who have contributed to and advanced the University at Buffalo for a specific purpose, or served UB in a voluntary capacity for a significant period of time. The recipient's achievements have greatly enhanced the quality of life of the entire UB community.

Pioneering Award

For many years, there was no outlet or venue for women at the university to exhibit their athletic talents in intercollegiate competition. They either competed individually, in intramurals or under "club" auspices. This award honors the accomplishments of outstanding participants during those years, and recognizes the advocacy of women's athletics by coaches and administrators.

Distinguished Alumni Award

This award was created to honor alumni who have made significant accomplishments in athletics once they have earned their degrees from the university. The award is meant to honor those who have excelled in such things as coaching (at any level) as athletic administrators, or as professional or amateur athletes.
