@UB, May 2005As you read this issue of @UB, I hope you are as impressed as I am with news of our students, alumni, faculty and staff, many of whom have been lauded during this season of pomp and circumstance. On behalf of the UB Alumni Association, congratulations to our newest graduates. Approximately 5,000 individuals have been added to the ranks of UB alumni with this month’s 15 commencement ceremonies, and I welcome you into the fold. UB held its first Celebration of Academic Excellence April 29, which placed a special emphasis on undergraduate student excellence in research, scholarship and creative activities, reflecting one of the distinctive opportunities of an undergraduate education at UB. To read more about the event, click here. Congratulations to all. Finally, a reminder to come back to UB for Homecoming 2005, October 5-8. In addition to the traditional football game on Saturday, October 8 against the Akron Zips, a variety of events are being planned across the campus, including the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Details on all activities will be sent out as plans become finalized. Robert O. Heard on Campus“We’re constantly arguing among ourselves – as families, as countries – about the stories we tell. As a nation moves forward through time, people change the stories according to the times they’re in. Democracy is not a tea party; it’s an argument.” --Internationally acclaimed novelist and public intellectual Salman Rushdie, during his April 28 appearance in Alumni Arena as part of the Distinguished Speakers Series.. In My Opinion...For many, graduating from UB is just the beginning of the journey. Although many UB alumni live in Western New York, thousands live outside the area, around the country and the world.
