@UB, July 2006Everyone has an opinion. From politics and the war in Iraq to religion and right-to-life, people all over the globe are willing to share their opinion. Just pick up the paper, turn on the TV or radio, or log onto the Internet and you will run up against the opinions of others. We at UB value your opinion on matters crucial, and trivial, to UB. That's why we ask you for your opinion on a UB-related topic in the "In My Opinion" section of this newsletter. Please take the time to "talk back" to us. Everyone has an opinion. Share yours. I also wanted to direct your attention to one of the items in the Hot Links section of this newsletter. UB researchers are taking part in a breast cancer prevention study and are looking for female participants. I urge you to read more about this important study and to consider taking part if you qualify.
UNIVERSITY NEWSHISTORY SCHOLARSHIP: The memory of a UB history student who died in 2003 will live on, thanks to the efforts of his parents, who established the Bryan G. Argo Memorial Scholarship in History. It was awarded this year to Justin Martin, a senior from North Tonawanda. SPORTS PERFORMANCE CENTER: A new sports performance training facility offering twice the space for physical training by UB student-athletes will open this fall thanks to a $500,000 gift from UB alumnus Robert G. Morris, B.A. '67, and his wife, Carol L. Morris. INFORMATICS REORGANIZATION: The Department of Communication and Department of Library and Information Studies, which constituted the School of Informatics, will have new administrative homes beginning this fall. The Department of Communication will return to the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Library and Information Studies will become part of the Graduate School of Education. "MEGA" DEPARTMENT: UB is only the 15th university to offer an academic concentration in the field of visual studies, which involves the formulation of critical discussions by artists and scholars in different fields that address the contemporary culture of images. NEW NAME: The Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research, one of three established by the National Science Foundation, is shortening its name to MCEER. UB PEOPLEFIVE FACULTY HONORED: Five faculty members and lecturers have received Milton Plesur Excellence in Teaching Awards from the undergraduate Student Association for their commitment to students and the quality of their teaching.Read more. CHIEF CANTY: John M. Canty, Jr., M.D., Albert and Elizabeth Rekate Professor of Medicine, has been named chief of the new Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. BREAKING RESEARCHSAFEST SEAT: UB researchers analyzing data from thousands of auto accidents have concluded that a car's middle back seat - most often considered the least desirable seat in a car - is, in fact, the safest. HEART MUSCLE: Pioneering research at UB focusing on reversing a heart dysfunction called "hibernating myocardium" that can cause disabling heart failure and sudden death has received a major boost with a $2.5 million grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. INTERNATIONAL EFFORT: UB researchers are beginning two new studies as part of an international effort to prevent type 1 diabetes that involves researchers at 22 clinical centers in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. HEARD ON CAMPUS"As our student-athletes grow in the outstanding classroom setting that UB offers, it is also critically important that their athletic ‘lab space' - that is, the time they spend conditioning and strengthening themselves - offers the same opportunity for excellence." --Robert G. Morris, at the June 28 announcement of his gift to UB to build a sports training facility on the North (Amherst) Campus. IN MY OPINIONImagine that you just received word that you are to inherit $10 million. You decide you want to give $1 million to the university.
